Unless you are trying to get maximum carry with no roll, I advise not using full backspin on your drives.

The same can apply for using full topspin in that you will get the minimum yardage in carrying and not nearly as much roll as you had hoped for. 

 

Golf is a game of delicate balances and I have found that going to one extreme or the other is not going to result in optimal outcomes.

 

The only time I would use full backspin is to control stopping the ball to keep it in a fairway.

 

Driving with a tailwind it is almost always better to apply 50% backspin except when the elevation is down quite a bit then I suggest you increase the backspin to 75%.

 

For most shots into the wind, it is better to hit the shot flat to increase your total distance.  

No spin is the spin of choice for into the wind or with a sidewind.

The one exception is St Andrew. Here we apply the "Keefer Rule."

Almost always use topspin on all your drives to increase distance.

 

Another driving trick, such as the first hole on St Andrew, is to use a punch shot with full back spin to control and limit the distance of your drive to keep it out of trouble.
