Golf!

Things you didn’t know,

didn’t know you wanted to know,

Or

that you actually don’t want to know!

Special thanks to Eve (Ladypetsy) for kindly forwarding on to me, some documents containing all this ‘stuff’

  • FORE! – The term ‘fore’ was originally used in the Scottish military. It is the shortened form of ‘afore’ or ‘before’ and was used to warn the front row of riflemen to look out so they wouldn’t get shot by those in the back rows.

  • ‘BOGEY’ – The term ‘bogey’ comes from the term used for ‘boogeyman’, which is a term used today for a scary and elusive person. The ‘bogeyman was first introduced in an 1890’s song (written in the UK about a man who hid in the shadows. Part of the lyrics are “I’m the Bogey Man, catch me if you can”. Scottish golfers equated the idea of obtaining a perfect the golf score with catching the elusive bogeyman and thus nicknamed the move of getting one over par a bogey.

  • Mary, Queen Of Scots, was the first female to play the game of golf. It was the Queen who first coined the term ‘caddy’, calling her assistants ‘cadets’.

  • Golf balls will travel further on ‘hot’ days.

  • A titanium driver hitting a golf ball has the capability of creating a sonic boom (Brian will never achieve this though lol).

  • The first golf course in the USA was the Oakhurst Links Golf Course in White Sulfur, West Virginia. It was built in 1884 but is no longer in use today.

  • The only golf course on the island of Tonga has 15 holes and there is no penalty if a monkey steals your golf ball!

  • Golf country clubs in Japan are very exclusive. The sport is so popular and there are so few available courses, that many clubs charge $1 million to join!

  • At Camp Bonifas, a golf course in South Korea, the rough is full of land mines and they are set off regularly! If that isn’t scary enough for you.. go play at the Merapi golf course in Indonesia. There you will find an active volcano that’s has erupted 3 times since the 1990’s and has killed hundreds of people!

  • Don’t like to play golf when it is hot? Head over to the golf course in Uummannaq, Greenland. You will need to play in a very warm coat! The landscaping is filled with icebergs and playing it, you run the risk of hypothermia or frostbite. The greens are ‘white’ and if you choose to use white golf balls, you will struggle to find them against the snow!
